Feast of Saint Flavian
📅 Every year, on 24 November
On 24 November Capitignano celebrates its patron Saint Flavian, Patriarch of Constantinople and martyr; the town preserves Palazzo Ricci.
The village lived on the peat of Campotosto: to bring it down they cut the Svolte della Lima, four kilometres at fifteen per cent, and in 1922 a railway from L'Aquila reached here as well. It was slow, but it carried peat, timber, wool and chestnuts, and the village passed two thousand inhabitants for the first time. When the peat ran out, and the line was never extended to Teramo, it closed and people went away.
The name comes from a Roman landowner, Capitonius. In the eighteenth century pope Pius VI spent his summers at palazzo Ricci, which he had restored after the earthquake of 1703; the church of San Domenico is of those years too, rebuilt on a design by Giuseppe Valadier. The ground has not stopped: 2009, then the Amatrice shocks, and on the eighteenth of January 2017 the epicentre was here.
