Montereale

Province: L'Aquila · Region: Abruzzo · Population: 2,812 · Postal code: 67015

Montereale is a municipality of springs. Within its territory, near the hamlet of Aringo, rises the Aterno, the main river of Abruzzo, and just beyond the ridges lie the springs of the Tronto and the Velino as well; the pass of Montereale is taken as the line that separates the Abruzzese Apennine from the Umbrian and Marchigian one. The valley, after all, was for a long time an enormous Pleistocene lake, and that explains why people began to live here late and high up: of that water there remains a marshy bottom in a place still called Madonna in Pantanis.

In the late Middle Ages the settlement grew under the name Monte Regale and Conrad the Fourth granted it the title of city; the earthquake of 1703 razed it and it was rebuilt. The shape of the settlement is unusual: instead of a single centre there are the Ville, some three dozen scattered clusters across a very wide territory, once grouped into four Quarti. And there is a negative fact worth as much as a positive one: Montereale, though close by, took no part in the founding of L'Aquila.
