Campotosto

Province: L'Aquila · Region: Abruzzo · Population: 586 · Postal code: 67013

Campotosto stands at one thousand four hundred metres, one of the highest villages in the Apennines. The fault that runs beneath it carries its name: there was the epicentre of the earthquake of 1703, which almost razed it, and there it woke again on 18 January 2017, when the shocks damaged seventy per cent of the built-up area and forced the demolition of the parish roof and of the town hall's little tower.

The lake beside it is artificial and took away the pastures: three dams, one of the largest reservoirs in Italy, and in 2017 the fear — later ruled out by the national risk commission — that a Vajont might repeat itself. What remains is the wind that brings windsurfers in summer, and the mortadella of Campotosto, made here with pigs raised for cured meat, not for fresh.
