The municipality is made of nine villages strung along a road, and the town hall is at Vallecupa. The oldest is called Castello: an elliptical ring of walls and towers with the houses inside, lived in until the middle of the twentieth century, as at nearby Castel Camponeschi. Campana is entered by a stone bridge with a bastion in the middle, where the toll was paid.
Fagnano too was among the castles that in 1254 founded L'Aquila, and for that in 1423 it found itself besieged by Braccio da Montone. Outside the hamlet of Ripa there is a sanctuary cut into the rock, with fifteenth-century frescoes. The earthquake of 6 April 2009 brought down, among other things, the sixteenth-century church of Sant'Antonio Abate, which held frescoes dated one by one.
