Villa Sant'Angelo

Province: L'Aquila · Region: Abruzzo · Population: 425 · Postal code: 67020

At half past three in the morning of 6 April 2009 the earthquake brought down ninety per cent of the houses and killed seventeen people. The village was already small: from the one thousand and twenty-seven inhabitants of the 1921 census many had left, nearly all of them for two towns in Pennsylvania, East Brady and New Castle.

Villa Sant'Angelo was born from the joining of two villages: Sant'Angelo, which the Lombards built around the church of Saint Michael, and Tussillo, with the church of Sant'Agata. Both were elliptical, with the houses in a ring around a courtyard, and at Villa that courtyard is today the town hall square. From here came Colombo Andreassi, the lawyer executed in 1799 for having supported the Neapolitan Republic.
