Sant'Eusanio Forconese

Province: L'Aquila · Region: Abruzzo · Population: 418 · Postal code: 67020

The church here is fortified: it still has two of the four round corner towers and much of the wall that surrounded it. There are very few like it in Italy. Inside, the crypt is divided into seven small aisles by little columns each different from the next, and on the lintel of the doorway the saint is carved holding his heart in his hand.

At the fountain in the square, which is of 1894, water was scarce in summer and the women queued with their copper jars, quarrelling. But when the cows came back from the fields, whoever had just filled her jar emptied it into the basin to let them drink: the animals came first. The village used to be called Cinque Ville, after the five hamlets that made it up.
