Saints John and Paul and Saint Lucy, and the cheese game
📅 Every year, on the last weekend of June
Magliano de' Marsi celebrates its co-patrons Saints John and Paul and Saint Lucy on the last weekend of June.
The name is a hammer. Muzio Febonio, in his Historiae Marsorum, derived Magliano from the workshops that in imperial times worked iron and made weapons, and offered as proof the seal used to mark public documents: two half-naked smiths bending a red-hot iron on the anvil with the sledgehammer. That image is still the comune's coat of arms. Not far away, at Alba Fucens, Perseus of Macedon died after 168 BC, and it has been supposed that his tomb was raised along the via Valeria, in this territory.
The Marsica earthquake of 1915 razed almost the whole historic centre, after the quakes of 1703 and of 1904, the latter with its epicentre at Rosciolo, had already done damage. Cities and institutions of northern Italy contributed to the rebuilding: Vicenza, Padua, Verona, Cittadella, Savona. At Rosciolo dei Marsi, on the slopes of the Velino, the small Romanesque church of Santa Maria in Valle Porclaneta has survived, built in all probability in the first half of the eleventh century.
