Tagliacozzo

Province: L'Aquila · Region: Abruzzo · Population: 6,939 · Postal code: 67069

Tagliacozzo has 6,939 inhabitants in the western Marsica, at the foot of Monte Civita, and the name describes the landscape: it most probably comes from talus and cotium, "cut in the rock", the cleft that separates Civita from Monte La Difesa. In 1268, on the Piani Palentini which the town overlooks, Conradin of Swabia and Charles I of Anjou fought the battle that settled the contest between Hohenstaufen and Angevins in the Kingdom of Sicily. It was won by a stratagem: Alard de Valéry brought his men round behind troops that already believed themselves victorious. Dante recalls it in the twenty-eighth canto of the Inferno.

Then there is a story that left the town and went round the world. In the sixteenth century, because of the intolerance suffered in the Kingdom of Naples, a substantial Jewish community chose to settle in the old town of Tagliacozzo, a few kilometres from the border of the Papal State. In 1515 the exile struck the whole kingdom and the community had to leave: from that period in the Marsica the Jews took the surname Tagliacozzo, which many people still carry today. The town itself had changed state as well: in 1409 Pope Alexander V detached the county from the Kingdom of Naples and attached it to the Papal State, as a reward.
