Feast of San Bartolomeo
📅 Every year, on 24 August
On 24 August Sant'Eufemia a Maiella, a municipality of 299 inhabitants in the province of Pescara, celebrates its patron San Bartolomeo the apostle.
Sant'Eufemia a Maiella was born of a shift downhill: around the fourteenth century the people of Roccacaramanico began to move to flatter ground, and the shepherds' houses became a village. The name comes from a church: in 1064, the Chronicon Casauriense relates, a church dedicated to Saint Euphemia was given to the abbey of San Clemente a Casauria, and it almost certainly stood here. For a long time, though, the village was called Santa Femi and then Santa Fumia: the name it bears today was given to it in 1863 by a decree of Victor Emmanuel II.
Roccacaramanico, the village where it all began, closed the circle in its own way. Perched on the highest hill of the Orta valley, in winter it was cut off by the snow, and in the nineteen-eighties it emptied completely: for some twenty years it was a ghost village. Then people bought the abandoned houses and put them back together one by one, and in the church of the Madonna delle Grazie a museum of Abruzzese country life was set up. Today you go there on purpose.
