Pietracamela

Province: Teramo · Region: Abruzzo · Population: 304 · Postal code: 64047

Pietracamela clings to the Teramo side of the Gran Sasso, beneath a boulder that towers over the houses. From that rock comes the first half of the name; over the second half scholars have always argued. Some trace it to the Cimmerians and some to the Italic people of the Camerti, some to the stone «in cacumine», that is at the summit; and then there is the finest theory, that the old name Pietra Cimmeria, which meant a dark and cavernous place, became Pietra Camela because that boulder, seen from below, has the humped shape of a camel.

The village is built entirely of local stone, put up between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, with stepped alleys and lintels carved with arms and inscriptions, and it is the only comune in the province of Teramo lying wholly inside the Gran Sasso national park. In 1991 the Corno Grande reserve was established here, two thousand hectares taking in the highest summit of the Apennines and the Calderone glacier: its purpose was to bring back the Abruzzo chamois, which had vanished from these mountains and which was reintroduced in 1992. Above the village open the Prati di Tivo, with their ski resort.
