Saint Roch, patron of the land of the Temple of Hercules
📅 Every year, on 16 August
Montorio al Vomano celebrates Saint Roch on 16 August, in the church dedicated to him.
Montorio al Vomano has 8,201 inhabitants at the mouth of the Vomano valley, below the Gran Sasso. The name comes from Mons Aureus, golden mountain, and it already appears turned into Montorio in two charters of the bishopric of Teramo from the forties of the tenth century, although the town went on using the old name for another hundred years. For four centuries the people of Montorio believed that the battle of Montorio of 1486, one of the episodes of the conspiracy of the barons, had been fought here. The mistake started with a book by Camillo Porzio of 1565 and historians passed it on one after another; today we know the battle was fought at another Montorio, in Tuscany, a hamlet of Sorano.
The town does have a large history of its own: the county passed to the Carafa because Vittoria Camponeschi, the last heir of the counts, married Giovanni Antonio of Maddaloni, and from that marriage came the future pope Paul IV. But the record its people are proudest of is a recent one: the electric light, switched on 10 December 1899, before the rest of the Teramo area. The mayor had written to engineers and to his colleagues in Tagliacozzo, Terni and Macerata to find out whether it was worth it; then a Naples firm fitted 71 bulbs in the squares and the streets, and the mayor of Teramo came in person to offer his congratulations.
