Fano Adriano

Province: Teramo · Region: Abruzzo · Population: 354 · Postal code: 64044

The name begins with a temple: Fano comes from the Latin fanum. On the second half, Adriano, scholars disagree — some derive it from a Fanum Traiani, and the initials F and T are still on the municipal coat of arms; some from the Ager Hatrianus, the territory that answered to Atri; some from Hadranus, a god of the Siculi, who were here before the Romans. On the top of the Colle San Marcello, on the ruins of that temple, the hermitage of the Annunziata was later built, and from it you can see the Gran Sasso, Pizzo Intermesoli and Monte Corvo.

The village has for its motto seven Fs, found on old inscriptions. In the village they are read as an exhortation — Fanesi Furono Forti Fatevi Forti Figli Fanesi, the men of Fano were strong, make yourselves strong, sons of Fano — but scholars think that they originally stood for the seven temples, the seven fana, of the Ager Hatrianus, of which this was the chief; and the same seven return in the «seven sisters», the churches dedicated to the Virgin scattered through the upper Vomano valley. In the parish church, which has a bell tower of 1550 and a doorway of 1693, the carved and gilded baroque altars carry a symbolism that comes from the magical and ritual world of Abruzzo rather than from any manual of sacred sculpture.
