Rocca Santa Maria

Province: Teramo · Region: Abruzzo · Population: 569 · Postal code: 64010

The municipality is scattered in hamlets far from one another, and the name comes from a tower that no longer exists. From here came Marco Sciarra, the bandit who in the late sixteenth century ruled the Monti della Laga: when his men stopped Torquato Tasso's party and the poet gave his name, Sciarra had the loot returned and let them go. In 1670 an edict against banditry brought reprisals from the brigands, who burned the hamlets.

On 25 September 1943, at Bosco Martese, scattered soldiers, anti-fascists from Teramo and escaped English and Slav prisoners faced a German unit and drove it back: it is regarded as the first open-field battle of the Italian Resistance. The reprisal came at once, and among the dead was Mario Capuani, who had organised the rising in his own house.
