Feast of Saint Gerard Majella
📅 Every year, on 2 September
On 2 September Muro Lucano celebrates Saint Gerard Majella, who was born here: his house is in the Pianello quarter, and in the evening the path he walked as a child is lit up.
The name of Muro Lucano records an overflow: the village of Pianello had shut itself inside walls, but people kept arriving and they began building outside. Those were the houses outside the wall — il muro — and from the wall came the name of the town. The Lucano was added in 1863, to keep it apart from Muro Leccese.
The town steps down a steep slope above a gorge, with the castle and the cathedral at the top serving as its acropolis. Down in the valley stood Numistro, the Lucanian town where in 210 BC Hannibal clashed with the consul Marcus Claudius Marcellus. There are 5,568 residents today.
