Rionero in Vulture

Province: Potenza · Region: Basilicata · Population: 13,444 · Postal code: 85028

After Skanderbeg's death, groups of Albanians fleeing the Ottoman advance reached the Kingdom of Naples and were distributed among the villages of the Vulture: in Rionero they were settled around the church of Sant'Antonio Abate. They worshipped in the Greek rite, and went on doing so until 1627, when the bishop of Melfi forced them over to the Latin one.

The town lies on the slopes of the Vulture, the extinct volcano whose craters hold the two lakes of Monticchio, and its name comes from the dark water that ran over the black tufa. In 1811 Murat made it a comune; from here came Carmine Crocco, the best known brigand chief of the post-unification South. The population is 13,444.
