The patrons of Rionero in Vulture are Saint Mark the Evangelist and Our Lady of Mount Carmel, celebrated on 25 April in the church of San Marco Evangelista.
Within the municipal territory stands the archaeological complex of the Torre degli Embrici, where excavations carried out in 2004 uncovered a Roman-age agricultural and thermal settlement, in use from the last centuries BC until the late Middle Ages; the tower itself was restored in 2024. Rionero, as the «casale of Santa Maria di Rivo Nigro», a fief of Atella in the diocese of Rapolla, first appears in a papal bull of Eugene III dated 9 June 1152.
