Ginestra

Province: Potenza · Region: Basilicata · Population: 741 · Postal code: 85020

In the restoration of the nineties, under the mother church, an immersion baptistery came to light, made of twelve arches, with figures inside that are probably the twelve apostles. The church is of the sixteenth century and had been rebuilt several times: nobody knew any longer that it was there.

The town was called Lombarda Massa, the Lombards' holding, until the nineteenth century; the Albanians arrived in 1478, when the lord of Ripacandida gave them leave to build. From Ripacandida, Ginestra broke away only in 1965. Arbëreshë is still spoken, and the comune has opened a language desk. There are 741 residents.
