On the first Saturday of July, in front of the parvis of the sanctuary of the Madonna del Pollino, the incanto is held: the statue is put up for auction, and the village that wins her will have the honour of carrying her in procession and of keeping her in its own church for part of the year.
The sanctuary stands at 1537 metres, on a spur above the Frido valley, and people climb up in procession on the first Sunday of June, with bagpipes and accordions; they come back down to San Severino on the second Sunday of September. The night between Friday and Saturday is spent up there, in huts or tents. There are 1,667 residents.

San Severino Lucano celebrates Saint Vincent Ferrer on the second Sunday of July; his church, in the upper part of the town, holds a 16th-century wooden crucifix, while the municipal territory marks the entrance to the heart of the Pollino.
