The patron saint of San Severino Lucano is Saint Vincent Ferrer, celebrated on the second Sunday of July. His church, in the upper part of the town, retains its original structure especially in the façade and holds a 16th-century wooden crucifix inside; two minor chapels, not open for worship, testify to the enormous devotion of the town's inhabitants. In the centre of the town stands instead the mother church, dedicated to Mary Most Holy of the Angels, which although retaining its 18th-century layout probably dates back to the first settlement.
The municipality, which together with its hamlets marks the entrance to the heart of the Pollino Massif on the north-eastern side, is crossed by the Frido torrent, at whose springs stands the sanctuary of the Madonna del Pollino, on a scenic rocky spur overlooking the whole valley. The absence of smog and large towns makes optimal star-gazing possible, so much so that astronomy enthusiasts have called San Severino Lucano «the town of the stars».
