Fardella

Province: Potenza · Region: Basilicata · Population: 625 · Postal code: 85034

Fardella was born out of an escape. Between 1690 and 1693 part of the population of Teana, fed up with the abuses of the marquis of Missanello, put itself under the protection of count Sanseverino and built a new village near Chiaromonte.

There are three versions of the name. It would come from the fardelli, the bundles the fugitives carried; or from a woman of Teana called Fardella, who refused the marquis the first night of her marriage; or, and this is the most accredited theory, from princess Maria Fardella, wife of the lord of Chiaromonte. A comune since 1808, absorbed into Chiaromonte in 1928, independent again in 1947. There are 625 residents.

Saint Anthony of Padua, patron of a town named after a princess

📅 Every year, on 13 June

Fardella celebrates Saint Anthony of Padua on 13 June, in the 1703 mother church dedicated to him; according to the most accepted theory, the town's name derives from Princess Maria Fardella, mother of the poet Aurora Sanseverino.
