Tramutola

Province: Potenza · Region: Basilicata · Population: 3,155 · Postal code: 85057

The oil came up on its own here. In the mid-nineteenth century asphalt was dug out of it, and samples from Tramutola went to the exhibition of arts and manufactures of 1853; then Agip arrived and between 1936 and 1943 drilled 47 wells, 26 of them productive. The field closed in 1959, after one last deep exploratory well.

Before the oil there was water: the name comes from terra motola, land full of water, and it was the Benedictines of Cava who drained the marsh and brought in mulberry and silkworms. When they were given the church of San Pietro in 1144, the bishop of Marsico gave up his rights in exchange for a pound of wax, a pound of incense and a pig a year. There are 3,155 residents.

The Madonna dei Miracoli who brought the rain in 1853

📅 Every year, on 17 May

Tramutola celebrates the Madonna dei Miracoli on 17 May; on that very date in 1853, her statue stepped backward on its own five times during a procession organised to invoke rain after a drought.
