Marsicovetere

Province: Potenza · Region: Basilicata · Population: 5,341 · Postal code: 85050

Below the town, where the via Herculia ran, the Bruttii Praesentes built themselves a villa of more than 1,700 square metres. In the second century Bruttia Crispina, wife of the emperor Commodus, came to live in it; when she fell from favour and was executed, the villa passed to imperial procurators and stayed in use until the seventh century.

Higher up, at a place called la Laura — from the Greek laura, the word for a hermit community — are the caves where monks fleeing the iconoclast persecution took shelter. Today the comune lives in three pieces: the old centre at 970 metres, inside the Appennino Lucano national park, and lower down Villa d'Agri and Barricelle. There are 5,341 residents.
