Montesano sulla Marcellana

Province: Salerno · Region: Campania · Population: 6,781 · Postal code: 84033

The name of the village is a diagnosis. Down below there was Marcellinum, in the middle of the marshes; between the unhealthy air and the plague, the inhabitants moved up the hill to eight hundred and fifty metres and called the new place Montesano, healthy mountain, for its good air and its springs. The rest of the name, sulla Marcellana, holds together the abandoned village and the road that ran through it.

It is the easternmost municipality of Campania, with more than four thousand hectares of woodland, among the largest in the Vallo di Diano. On the plateau of Magorno and Tardiano, if the winter rains enough, a lake forms and then disappears. In the main square of the town stands a neo-Gothic church as big as a cathedral, Sant'Anna, built between 1954 and 1959 at the wish of Filippo Gagliardi, a local man, who also left the village the prize that bears his name.
