Grumento Nova

Province: Potenza · Region: Basilicata · Population: 1,704 · Postal code: 85050

Around 1700 prince Carlo Maria Sanseverino rebuilt the family palace and put inside it twelve apartments and a theatre, 'graceful for musical dramas and comedies': he was an enthusiast, and wrote musical comedies himself. One of them, Eliododro, he had performed for the wedding of his daughter Aurora.

Of the palace only the court hall is still standing; the stable, reached from the steccato, held a hundred and twenty-two horses. The town was called Saponaria until 1863 and Saponara di Grumento until 1932, when it took its name from the Roman city next door: Grumentum, whose remains can be visited along with the archaeological museum of the Alta Val d'Agri. There are 1,704 residents.
