Feast of Saint Onuphrius
📅 Every year, on the second Sunday of August
On the second Sunday of August Centrache, a municipality of 415 inhabitants in the province of Catanzaro, honours and celebrates its patron Saint Onuphrius.
The name comes from the Greek kentrikós, «central», and says by itself that the village was born in Byzantine times, like Olivadi and Cenadi next door. A hamlet of Squillace, it passed through a very long chain of feudal lords: after the Monfort and the Marzano came the Borgia, who held it until the first half of the eighteenth century. It is the least populous comune in the province of Catanzaro.
Two votes tell the village better than any chronicle. In the plebiscite of 1860 for the unification of Italy, Centrache cast 340 yeses and a single no. In the referendum of 2 June 1946, on the other hand, it gave 692 votes to the monarchy and 83 to the republic: and those figures also say how much the place has emptied, because the voters of then were far more than the inhabitants of today.
