On 13 June Petrizzi, a municipality of 1,167 inhabitants in the province of Catanzaro, celebrates its patron Saint Anthony of Padua.
Petrizzi stands on the isthmus between the gulf of Squillace and that of Sant'Eufemia: the narrowest point in Italy between the Ionian and the Tyrrhenian, with both seas close at hand. The village is up in the hills, less than eight kilometres from the Ionian; below it runs the Beltrame, which within the comune drops four hundred metres in some ten kilometres.
On the Sunday after Trinity comes Corpus Domini, and along the streets of the village they lay carpets and pictures made of flowers: the host passes in procession over the flowers. The mother church is dedicated to Maria Santissima della Pietra; outside the centre stands the quarter of the convent of Santa Maria della Pietà.
