Saint Joseph, patron of Gimigliano
📅 Every year, on 19 March
Gimigliano celebrates Saint Joseph on 19 March.
Gimigliano has 3,421 inhabitants on Monte San Salvatore, looking over the valley of the Corace, and it is really two villages: Gimigliano superiore, which in dialect is "Susu", and Gimigliano inferiore, which is "Jiusu". They began to fill up at the end of the ninth century with people fleeing the Saracen raids on the Ionian coast, and they took shape at the invitation of the Byzantine general Nikephoros Phokas the Elder, who in his campaign of 885 and 886 urged the people to gather in the kastellia, the villages on the heights that were easier to defend.
Under their feet is a geology that has kept scholars arguing. Two building stones were quarried here, a pink marble known as persichino and a green stone: the latter is an ophiolite, and according to the hypothesis of the geologist Walter Álvarez it formed when the Tethys Ocean closed and the African plate ran into the Eurasian one, raising the Alps. It would then have broken away from the Alps and ended up down here. From more recent history, on the other hand, there remains an irony: in 1807, the year Gimigliano finally obtained its administrative autonomy, the French of Joseph Bonaparte set it on fire.
