Feast of Saint Sebastian
📅 Every year, on 20 January
On 20 January Jacurso celebrates its patron Saint Sebastian with a procession; since 2016 the first Saturday of August has hosted the Festa del Ritorno, dedicated to emigrants.
Jacurso stands almost at the centre of the Catanzaro isthmus, the narrowest point of Italy, and from the higher parts of its territory both seas can be seen: the Tyrrhenian on one side, the Ionian on the other. The first time the village appears in a document is in the Maida inventory of 1466, when it was one of that fief's outlying settlements; in the village, though, they say it was founded by shepherds a century earlier. The sanctuary of the Madonna della Salvazione stands on the ruins of a friary the Carmelites founded in 1576.
For a village of a few hundred people, Jacurso is known for something unexpected: artisan ice cream, its most renowned product. The other thing the village has given itself is the Festa del Ritorno, the feast of the return, set up in 2016 and held every first Saturday of August: a day for the emigrants of Jacurso scattered around the world, who come home that Saturday.
