Lamezia is three towns that decided to become one: Nicastro, Sambiase and Sant'Eufemia merged in 1968, taking their name from the thermal waters of Caronte, where people have soaked since Roman times. Today it is Calabria's hub — international airport, rail junction, motorways — but with a character of its own: the Norman-Swabian castle above Nicastro, the Bastion of Malta on the plain, olive groves to the horizon.
