Saint Thomas Aquinas, patron of Pianopoli
📅 Every year, on 7 March
Pianopoli celebrates Saint Thomas Aquinas on 7 March, with Our Lady of Sorrows as co-patron on the fourth Sunday of September.
Pianopoli exists because of an earthquake. On the twenty-seventh of March 1638 a violent shock struck central Calabria, and many inhabitants of Feroleto, today Feroleto Antico, left the mountain village to come down to a nearby area, flatter and thought to be safer. The new settlement was called Feroleto Piano, the Feroleto on the flat, to tell it from the old one: the present name is nothing but that word grown up.
The place they chose is a peculiar one: Pianopoli lies on the isthmus of Marcellinara, the narrowest point of Italy, where the peninsula measures least between its two seas. The village has a single parish, San Tommaso d'Aquino, and beside it the church of the Addolorata, its co-patron: her wooden statue goes out in procession on the fourth Sunday of September. The church of Santa Croce stands instead on a small rise, and two more, Sant'Agostino and San Giuseppe, are in the hamlets of Palazzo and Rizzuto.
