Martirano Lombardo

Province: Catanzaro · Region: Calabria · Population: 1,167 · Postal code: 88040

The earthquake of the eighth of September 1905 killed seventeen people and left Martirano unfit to live in. A Milanese relief committee, chaired by the mayor of Milan, proposed leaving the old village and making a new one: it was built at Piano delle Sorbe and inaugurated on the twenty-third of October 1907, with houses for two hundred and six families, a kindergarten and a small hospital paid for by the citizens of Busto Arsizio. Every house has a timber frame, iron ties, a garden, and stands well away from the next.

In 1929 the comune took the name Martirano Lombardo, to thank those who had rebuilt it. The old village did not like it: there was a revolt, and on the seventeenth of November of that year they burned the town hall. The quarrel ended in 1956, when Martirano Antico became a comune of its own again and took back its former name.
