Feast of Saint Sebastian
📅 Every year, on 20 January
On 20 January Altilia celebrates its patron Saint Sebastian; the territory preserves the Ponte di Annibale and an Italic sanctuary.
On the Savuto, on the boundary with Scigliano, stands a Roman bridge built between 131 and 121 before Christ. It was part of the Via Popilia, the road that the consul Publius Popilius Laenas had driven from Reggio to Capua to link the toe of Italy with Rome; local people have always called it Hannibal's bridge, but it has nothing to do with Hannibal. The Antonine Itinerary counted eighteen miles from Cosenza to the Savuto, and on the left bank of the river there was a posting station, the statio ad Sabatum.
The village stands on a hill looking down on the river, and takes in the hamlet of Maione as well. There are the friary of Santa Maria delle Grazie, the church of Santa Maria Assunta, the caves of San Francesco and two noble houses, Palazzo Marsico and Palazzo Federici. The road, at any rate, has never stopped passing through: two thousand years after the bridge, Altilia has its own junction on the motorway that climbs Calabria.
