Motta Santa Lucia

Province: Catanzaro · Region: Calabria · Population: 871 · Postal code: 88040

When in the fifteenth century the king made the village a fief of the count of Martirano, the people would have none of it and defended themselves with arms. It went on for years: in the end, in 1514, starving, they pulled down their own castle and surrendered to four hundred foot soldiers led by the governor of Calabria. Many had already fled to Scigliano, and the surrender laid down that no one should go and fetch them back.

The village was called Motta di Porchia; in 1638 an earthquake destroyed it, and it was rebuilt in the districts of San Nicola and Santa Lucia, taking the name it has now. In 1697 the people fought again, this time for the diritto di sbarro, the right to gather acorns and chestnuts freely in the woods of the fief: a local canon, Antonio Marasco, made a poem of it.
