Miglierina

Province: Catanzaro · Region: Calabria · Population: 799 · Postal code: 88040

The deed exists, and it is dated 20 August 1577: some families of poor farmers and shepherds from Scigliano, who had no land in their own village, asked the duke of Nocera to be allowed to settle «where it is called la Migliarina» and to farm there. Permission came, and that is how the village was born. In the hearth count of 1561 there were already forty-six of them.

The name comes from a weed, the migliarina, which spoils millet. Miglierina lies at the narrowest point of Calabria, where there is very little from one sea to the other. From the eighteenth century to the early twentieth the masters worked here: carpenters, gunsmiths and plasterers, whom they called «babbari», and their work is found across half of Calabria.
