Amato

Province: Catanzaro · Region: Calabria · Population: 837 · Postal code: 88040

Amato stands on the isthmus of Marcellinara, the narrowest point in Italy: from here you see both seas, the gulf of Sant'Eufemia with the Aeolian islands on one side and the Ionian on the other. The Albanians came after 1479, when the Ottomans took Shkodër; the first count of hearths, in 1530, records Albanian families only.

For almost two centuries only Albanian was spoken here and the Greek-Byzantine rite was followed; then, from the eighteenth century, both language and rite were lost. What remains is a fountain they call the Greeks' fountain and a street named after the Greeks: that is all. The earthquake of 1783 did heavy damage and opened cracks in the ground. In the square stands the monument to Michele Torchia, diplomat and man of the Parthenopean Republic.
