Feast of Saint Vitus
📅 Every year, on 15 June
On 15 June Aieta, a municipality of 839 inhabitants in the province of Cosenza, celebrates its patron Saint Vitus.
The name is Greek: Asty Aetou, the city of the eagle, like an eagle perched on the summit; and the eagle is in the coat of arms too. The village looks out on the Tyrrhenian from five hundred metres up, but its food and its feasts are those of the mountains. In 1928, when the municipality of Praia a Mare was created, Aieta lost its strip of coast.
At the top of the old centre stands the palace of the Martirano-Spinelli, one of the few Renaissance buildings in Calabria. In the village they still keep the machines for working wool that Giacomo Cosentino bought at Morano in 1925: some worked by hand, others by pulleys, first steam-driven and then electric, and they were in use until 1970. Below the village lies the valley of the Mills.
