Maratea

Province: Potenza · Region: Basilicata · Population: 5,150 · Postal code: 85046

Basilicata touches the Tyrrhenian for barely thirty kilometres and spends every one of them well: Maratea is a run of black-and-turquoise coves beneath a vertical mountain, its Christ the Redeemer — twenty-one metres of white marble, among the tallest Christ statues in the world — arms open over the gulf of Policastro since 1965.

The old town, called "the town of 44 churches", weaves lanes, noble portals and small squares made for long evenings. The little harbour mixes fishing boats and sails; sea caves are explored with the fishermen. A pearl off the main routes — which is part of the charm.
