Trecchina

Province: Potenza · Region: Basilicata · Population: 2,322 · Postal code: 85049

Between the eleventh and twelfth centuries groups of heretics came down here from Piedmont, from the Monferrato in particular, and their language stayed: Trecchina is one of the Lucanian towns where Gallo-Italic is spoken. Until the seventies you could still hear the sibilant ending of the second person singular, an archaic leftover.

The town sits on a plateau at 500 metres, under the peaks that gave it the popular name of tre chine, three slopes, though if you look properly there are four of them. The ground beneath is riddled: the Sant'Angelo cave runs 580 metres, the Festola Grande drops 136. Since 1987 the register of Basilicata's caves has been kept here. There are 2,322 residents.
