Feast of Sant'Elia Profeta
📅 Every year, on the fourth Saturday of May
On the fourth Saturday of May Malito, a municipality of 812 inhabitants in the province of Cosenza, celebrates its patron Sant'Elia Profeta.
No one knows whether Malito was born with the Romans or with refugees: some point to the Roman tombs and ruins found in the territory, others tell that around 986 it was founded by people of Cosenza fleeing the Saracen raids, who moved inland from the coast.
Of those refugees the name of a district has remained, the Casalini, today piazza Mancini; and from it the northern part of the village came to be called Supra Casale and the southern one Mpedicasale. In 1321 the village was enfeoffed, together with Belsito, to Goffredo di Raone. The ruined castle remains and the parish church of Sant'Elia the prophet; above, within the municipal territory, stands Monte Serratore, one thousand two hundred and thirty-three metres, one of the highest peaks of the Catena Paolana.
