Belsito

Province: Cosenza · Region: Calabria · Population: 958 · Postal code: 87030

The village was called Crapassito. In 1535 Charles V passed through, liked the place and renamed it Belsito: the new name stayed. Between 1644 and 1647 it was sold, along with the other casali of Cosenza, to the Grand Duchy of Tuscany; later it was a village of Marzi, and a comune in its own right only from 1816.

Saint John the Baptist is celebrated here three times a year: on the twelfth of February, because he is said to have saved the village from an earthquake; on the twenty-third of June for his birth, with the fair of the Surda; and on the last Sunday in August for his death, with aubergine meatballs. Meanwhile, at contrada Serre, excavations have turned up hundreds of early medieval graves.
