Carpanzano

Province: Cosenza · Region: Calabria · Population: 300 · Postal code: 87050

The earthquake of 1638 brought the village down, and the rebuilding changed its name too: it rose again as Carpansano, and Carpanzano is what the centuries have made of that. The source calls it the oldest village around Cosenza, and at the same time the second least populous in Calabria: the last place belongs to Staiti, at the other end of the region.

Between 1940 and 1943 Carpanzano was one of the fourteen Calabrian comuni that the fascist authorities designated for the free internment of Jewish refugees. Three were confined here, Poles, and all of them were freed when the Allied army arrived, in September 1943. Of the old village there remain the mother church of the seventeenth century, the fourteenth-century sanctuary and the former church of San Pietro, now a museum.
