Belvedere Marittimo

Province: Cosenza · Region: Calabria · Population: 9,120 · Postal code: 87021

On the sandstone doorway of the little church of the Rosario the year 1091 is carved: it is the oldest monument in the town, which is divided into two parts some way apart, the medieval borough perched on its rocky spur and the marina, which grew later by the sea. Above stands the castle, which the Normans built on the highest point of the coast.

In the church of the Santissimo Crocifisso, on the other hand, there is a small mystery. The sculpture on the altar, an enormous wooden Christ, carved and painted, is of 1711 and is the work of Pietro Frasa, a Milanese preacher who had crucifixes carved and then painted them himself; he died at Foggia that same year, at thirty-three. The Christ of Belvedere repeats the one in the cathedral of Foggia, and some think it may be the one meant for Biccari, of which all trace was lost in Apulia.
