In the middle of the castle courtyard grows an old olive tree, and it was planted by Austrian prisoners, as a sign of peace, on the day of the armistice: 4 November 1918. The castle is Angevin in form and was built by the Sanseverino princes of Bisignano in the second half of the fifteenth century: it is rectangular in plan and keeps a wide loggia. The parish church of Santa Maria della Neve goes back to 1200 and holds a baptistery and a portal of 1600; and around the village stand the convent of San Francesco di Paola and the chapels of San Giuseppe, of the Madonna del Carmine and of San Michele Arcangelo.

Sangineto is really two villages: the old centre, which is up on the hill, and the Lido, at the locality of Le Crete, which is close to the sea and in summer multiplies its inhabitants, with its bars and its places to stay. What the two have in common is the table, and these are poor dishes with names of their own. There is the frissurata, made of dried courgettes, beans, potatoes and maize bread; potato gnocchi dressed with a sauce of sausage and braciole; aubergine polpette; hand-made fusilli with pork ragù; tagliatelle with beans and chickpeas; pasta and beans with ground red pepper; polenta with cabbage and broad beans, or with potatoes, beans and roasted peppers. In the countryside they make sausages and capocolli, and the household crafts are of the same kind: objects in willow, cane and rush, lace and embroidery, cheeses, dried fruit, honey, oil and wine.
