Feast of Saint Cyriacus the Abbot
📅 Every year, on 19 September
On 19 September Buonvicino celebrates Saint Cyriacus the Abbot; the village has dedicated two churches to him, one inside caves, plus a monumental statue in the square.
The name probably comes from the Byzantine-Calabrian family name Bombaci, or from the dialect word bombaci, which means snail; in Byzantine Greek the place was Bombakio. The village was born at the end of the thirteenth century from the union of three separate hamlets: Salvato, perched on the rock known as the Sasso dei Greci; Tripidone, in a small valley closed by three rocky knolls, which gave it its name; and Trigiano, further off towards Belvedere. The first two lived by herding and by the woods, the third by farming, and together they owned the whole countryside of present-day Buonvicino.
All three stood along the istmic road, in positions from which the traffic could be watched without danger: the road, in fact, is forced through a gorge barely five metres wide, called simply lo Stretto, between two very high walls of rock. Excavations at Salvato in 1978 and again in 1997 turned up fragments of roof tiles and plates and animal bones; on the other side, among the walls of Tripidone, a hand-forged iron dagger came to light. Today the village is watched over by a bronze statue of Saint Cyriac the Abbot seven metres high, set on the rocky spur of Zaccaniello.
