Canna

Province: Cosenza · Region: Calabria · Population: 785 · Postal code: 87070

In 1788 Canna bought itself: to separate from Nocara, on which it depended, it paid a tax that was worth as much as the whole village. Before that it was a cluster of houses lived in by people who had come from Nocara, and later it became a fief of the Sanseverino and of the Loffredo, marquises of Canna.

Along the stream, on the left bank, there are great boulders: here they say Polyphemus threw them, blinded, at the ship of Ulysses. The dialect of Canna belongs to the Lausberg area, a zone between Calabria and Basilicata where people speak in an older way than elsewhere. At the end of the nineteenth century there were one thousand seven hundred inhabitants; today there are fewer than half.
