Two cities in one since 2018, and two treasures you would not expect: at Rossano, the Codex Purpureus — a sixth-century Byzantine gospel book on purple parchment, listed in the UNESCO Memory of the World register — and the Amarelli liquorice museum, a dynasty that has worked the roots of Calabria since 1731. At Corigliano, the ducal castle is among the best preserved in the south.
The merger created a giant: Corigliano-Rossano is the largest comune in Calabria by area and the third by population, and it runs from sea level up to almost twelve hundred metres, from the citrus groves of the Ionian to the chestnut woods of the Sila. In between, kilometres of orange orchards: this is where the IGP clementine ripens, and monumental chestnuts and olives still stand. The sea of the Sibaritide and the excavations of ancient Sybaris complete a stop that almost nobody makes — until they discover it.
