The town's most important feast tells the story of a journey. In 1571 a group of coppersmiths from Dipignano — the quadarari, as they are called here — travelled as far as Ponti, in Piedmont, and presented themselves to the marquis Cristoforo del Carretto, known for his courtesy, asking for shelter and food and offering in exchange their skill as craftsmen. The marquis handed them an enormous cauldron and promised to fill it with flour if they managed to mend it; the coppersmiths did, and the marquis kept his word, giving them a great quantity of polenta flour. Out of that episode was born the sagra del polentone, which at Dipignano is held every second year in September, and it is the reason why the town is twinned with Ponti: two comuni a thousand kilometres apart, held together by a mended cauldron.

The town lies on a slope to the right of the Iassa stream, in the upper valley of the Crati, and is made of six hamlets; the municipal territory climbs from 243 metres to 1175. About the name there are two hypotheses: that it comes from the Hebrew Di-biniam, «rich in houses» or «rich in pine cones», or that it is a Latin estate name, that is the land of one Depinius. In Dipignano there is an active Waldensian community, concentrated in an old nucleus of houses called Doviziosi: a few years ago it bought from the Curia the church dedicated to saint Hippolytus, restored it and made it its own place of worship.
