Castelluccio Superiore

Province: Potenza · Region: Basilicata · Population: 860 · Postal code: 85040

The old centre is divided into eight vicinati, and each has its name in dialect: Campaner', Chiazz', Grutticeddr', Petalong', Postcastiddr', Santu Lij', Sol'i punzijen', Timbon'. They were the points where people met; today the town has emptied and those names are left to mark the blocks.

Above it stands Monte Zaccana, 1,580 metres, which marks the western limit of the Bosnian pine in Italy: here the trees are still young and grow better than elsewhere in the park. The town's name is a diminutive: the Sanseverino castle was small, and only a few ruins are left of it towards Porta Castello. There are 860 residents.

Saint Margaret of Antioch, patron celebrated with the lialò chant

📅 Every year, on 20 July

Castelluccio Superiore celebrates Saint Margaret of Antioch on 20 July, with mass, procession and the traditional lialò chant; the town is twinned with the Brazilian city of Iúna, founded by emigrants from Castelluccio between 1875 and 1890.
