Feast of Saint Donatus
📅 Every year, on 7 August
On 7 August Umbriatico, a municipality of 929 inhabitants in the province of Crotone, celebrates its patron Saint Donatus (san Donato).
Umbriatico has no castle, and never needed one: it sits on a crag that Ughelli described as ringed by dreadful precipices and unreachable, and even today you get there by a viaduct thrown over a very narrow isthmus. Its old name was Euria, like a diocese in Epirus that was dying out: it was probably brought here by refugees from there, when the place was a Byzantine kastron.
The town was a bishop's seat for eight centuries, but in 1317 pope John XXII allowed the see to be moved elsewhere: wars and the feudal lord had left it almost empty, and the bishops went to live at Cirò. The diocese was suppressed in 1818. Today Umbriatico is the least densely peopled municipality in the province of Crotone: twelve inhabitants per square kilometre, the rest is woodland.
