Feast of San Michele Arcangelo
📅 Every year, on the first Sunday and Monday of May
On the first Sunday and Monday of May San Nicola dell'Alto, a municipality of 898 inhabitants in the province of Crotone, celebrates its patron San Michele Arcangelo.
The village belonged to the bishops of Umbriatico, who were also its barons: they remained so until 1818. It was one of them who, around 1480, allowed a hundred or so Albanians arrived from Epirus to settle here; at the beginning of the sixteenth century they climbed to the height between monte Pizzuta and monte San Michele and took the name of the old church of San Nicola.
The inhabitants have kept the Arbëresh language but lost the Greek-Byzantine rite, pressed by the Latin world around them. With seven and a half square kilometres it is the smallest municipality in the province of Crotone. On 6 December 1907, in the Monongah mine in West Virginia, hundreds of miners died in the worst mining disaster in American history: among them were emigrants from here.
